What is this tool?
Image to Text uses the Tesseract OCR engine compiled to WebAssembly, so full text recognition runs inside your browser instead of on a server. It reads printed text from photos, screenshots and scans in English, German, Spanish and French. On first use it downloads the recognition model for your chosen language; your images themselves are never uploaded anywhere.
Common uses
- Copying text out of a screenshot that can't be selected
- Digitizing a printed letter, receipt or book page
- Extracting text from a whiteboard or slide photo
- Making a scanned document's text editable again
FAQ
How accurate is the recognition?
Very good for sharp, well-lit printed text. Accuracy drops with blur, skew, low contrast or decorative fonts. Handwriting is generally not recognized reliably.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The OCR engine runs as WebAssembly in your browser. Only the language model is downloaded once — your image never leaves your device.
Which languages are supported?
English, German, Spanish and French. Pick the language that matches the text for the best results.
Why does the first run take longer?
The recognition model for your chosen language (a few megabytes) is downloaded and initialized on first use. After that it's cached by the browser.
