What is this tool?

Audio Stereo Tester plays a tone through the Web Audio API's stereo panner, letting you route audio fully to the left channel, fully to the right, or anywhere in between. It's a quick way to confirm that a pair of headphones or speakers is wired correctly and that both channels are working.

Common uses

  • Checking that new headphones or earbuds have working left/right channels
  • Diagnosing a speaker or audio cable that seems silent on one side
  • Verifying a stereo setup is wired correctly after moving speakers
  • Testing audio output routing on a new device

FAQ

Why does one side sound quieter even though both channels work?

This can happen with speaker placement, a partially faulty cable, or an unbalanced audio driver in one earbud/speaker — try adjusting the pan slider gradually to hear the transition and pinpoint the issue.

Does this test if my headphones are physically damaged?

It confirms whether each channel is producing sound at all, which is a good first diagnostic step, but it can't detect quality issues like distortion or damaged drivers beyond total silence.

What does the pan value mean?

Pan ranges from -1 (fully left) to 1 (fully right), with 0 being centered equally between both channels.
