How to use

  1. Choose kilometers or miles and enter the distance you ran.
  2. Enter your finish time in hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. Optionally enter your height to see an estimated stride length and step count.

What is this tool?

Running Pace Calculator converts a distance and finish time into your pace (minutes per km/mile) and speed (km/h and mph), the numbers most runners use to track and compare performance. It also estimates your stride length from your height using a standard running-stride formula, then uses that to estimate how many steps you took.

Common uses

  • Working out your pace after a training run or race
  • Planning a target pace to hit a specific finish time
  • Comparing pace across different runs measured in km or miles
  • Estimating step count for a run when you don't have a tracker

FAQ

How is stride length estimated?

Stride length is estimated as roughly 41.5% of height, a commonly used approximation for running stride. Actual stride length varies by pace, leg length and running form, so treat the step count as an estimate.

What's the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is how long it takes to cover a fixed distance (minutes per km or mile) — lower is faster. Speed is how far you travel in a fixed time (km/h or mph) — higher is faster. They're mathematically related but used in different contexts.

Can I use this for walking too?

Yes, the pace and speed calculations work the same way for walking, though the stride length estimate is calibrated for running and may be slightly long for a walking pace.
